A Whole New Mind

A whole new mind” 這本由Daniel H. Pink 寫作,中譯版翻為『未來在等待的人才』獲得了哈佛商業評論,新聞週刊及『紫牛』作者高汀等人的好評,同時被 strategy + business, The Miami Herald and Fast Company 等媒體推薦為2005年最佳企管書。

The book “A whole new mind” written by Daniel H. Pink gained favorable reviews by Harvard Business Review, Newsweek and Seth Godin, the author of the book “Purple Cow”. In the meantime it was recommended as a best business book of 2005 by strategy + business, The Miami Herald and Fast Company. In his book, he reveals the theories not invented by him, but it is the best, and also a book easy to be understood that completely describes the coming of a whole new trend: the 21st century is the era that progressed from a highly knowledge economic system to a conceptual age which values innovation, empathy and integration power. He said that these professionals who highly focus on left-brain abilities such as accountants, lawyers, computer engineers or MBA our fathers and mothers encouraged us to become in the past may be replaced the main stream by a group of special people who have creativity, empathy and who can catch trends or who can make our life meaningful such as designers, artists, nurses, psychologist and big-picture thinkers.
Why people who have high IQ now will face stern challenges? Why these skills which was regarded as no much useful and practical like design, art, and even playing just rise from the valley bottom? Pink indicates 3A main reasons: Abundance, Asia and Automation.

We can say that the present is the richest period than all other periods in the human’s history. When people don’t need to just be busy for three meals per day, it is very natural that people start to pay their attention to seeking for values about soul and esthetic sensibilities. In fact, the satisfactions material abundance can provide us are very limited. The fact that we care about soul issues and the fact that we are eager for personal fulfillment go much beyond our imagination. Therefore, the abilities to master design, interests & fun and the ability to make link to people’s emotions have became the keys. A good example: after the invention of electric light, do we need candles? The fact is we still need a lot of candles, but not only for illumination. Another example is how do you consider a toaster? A toaster is not only a toaster, but it is a decoration. How long we use toasters per day? Don’t you think a toaster should be beautiful as a decoration in your house by the other 1000+ minutes every day?

The next idea is Asia. The education in some Asia countries like India and china is becoming better and better. The graduates from these countries are the same good for writing computer programs or for finance accountings as American students. However, the important thing is they can be hired just with a cheap price equal to a fast-food part-time staff in America and Western European. Because of this, many left-brain job opportunities transfer to overseas developing countries. Not only limited in India and China, similarly many logically fixed flow path jobs run to Egypt, Brazil and Eastern European countries. In Taiwan, many Hi-tech companies moved their production operation to China and Vietnam where we can hire employees with very low salary. Isn’t this the same effect?

The third is Automation. It is the next edition of “Asia”, meaning the progress of computer science. We feel we are nothing if we just compare our left logical brain with computers. A computer can execute millions of count orders per second. Whatever accounting works, an indictment or a pre-diagnoses work can be almost done by computers perfectly. On the other hand, the Internet and computers make it much easy for us to get information. In the past, a person who knows everything is valuable. Now all the Encyclopedia Britannica knowledge can be saved in just a chip, $5. In other words, if we can not handle relevant or irrelevant information well, knowledge has become low price and useless at present.

In a simple way, there are three questions need to be solved.
1. Can someone offshore do it cheaper?
2. Can a computer do it faster?
3. Is what I am offering in demand in an age of abundance?

Fortunately, Pink thinks the fact is not that awful. The solution for developing skills for adapting to new eras is in our brain. Exactly to say, we need to wake up our right brain to develop High Concept and High Touch ability. The better thing is these skills are innate. Everyone is able to learn and do it well.

Betrayal, the threat of trust

Before the commencement of my cousin's new semester in uni, I invited him coming to my house to play a famous online strategic game AOE. We two players chose to become the ally nations fighting computer united army. Hostile computer army was stubborn, hard to be conquered by force. We both then built wonders and waited to win. I finished the wonder first Between us.

At the last one minute before winning the game, I had a sudden idea. It was the time this game was almost finished and I'd just like to make a little fun. I wanted to win the game alone so that I changed our diplomacy status from ally to enemy. My castle started shoot arrows to his cavaliers then we didn't win together; just I won. I didn't think that my actions had made him unhappy. In fact, at that time, I didn't mean to make him unhappy actually. It just was a game and it was not a big issue whether winning or losing. However, when I thought if the condition was reversed today, maybe I would be unhappy. Would that have been very good if we had won the game together? Yes, it would have.

I felt disappointed that I made this mistake. I don't hurt other people in general. It is important that I should behave and don't do these things which let other people lose their trust to me. Other than the problem of trust or distrust, I should avoid making other people unhappy.
I don't like to win a game, but lose more.

Why often people can not totally trust each other? I guess that is because we can not ignore the possibility of betrayal. In most times problems are not as simple as just playing a computer game. How could people choose to do if they have big conflicts for their benefit? I hope I will have enough wisdom to handle such problems.

Remember this vigilance.

Switch the professional field

By making a comprehensive observation about teaching in class of USYD and about the present economic society of Taiwan after my suspension from school, I found the graduated Audio program in school that could not be applied practically in career in Taiwan. Because of this difficulty, I had the thought about returning to music performing as my career. A period of time for less practice and the accident, however, had made it very slim for me to go back in music field. It is a more hard time indeed...

During this period, all these professions including computer music composing, applied IT, TESOL, Commerce, and even the Accounting subject which specially fit for the immigrant qualification were under my consideration. Finally, I chose to study the master of Commerce, probably majoring global marketing and logistics. I feel this subject is interesting and the graduates are also manpower on the present market. Being a top person in this field requires good creativity and logical analytic ability, containing the balance between both left and right brain. It is rather challenging. Although I am not a crafty person (people say that you can not be a good business man if you are not somewhat crafty) ha.., my intelligence is ok :) ... so it is perhaps a good career change.

I think it is not as bad as all that I can not find a job after completing the study. It is a good idea if I can start my career with some basic jobs in commerce. It is colorful in the business world; However, I will face the dark and complex business culture at the same time. It is inevitable that I have some worries about this because I just prepared to go start in this new field and have to compete with many experienced people who studied in commerce from their bachelor also with some intern experiences. Further more, I am over 25 year's old!

Through a series of issues, I quitted going on the road for music. I don't know it is good or bad. On the other hand, although music job is easy and simple for me, I feel it is a little….far from the most people. I perceived that now the economic condition in Taiwan is dropping. Ex. Low-income for young workers and the manpower moving out, industries moving out… I hope I can do something good to people in Taiwan, making some contributions to our economy. With this ideal and unfinished goal, I have more courage and strong belief to enter in commerce field.

Recently, there are signs of political unrest in Taiwan. At the same time the economic data express behind neighbor countries'. I am a little afraid that Taiwan would be the next Philippines. The important thing is that, however the world change, whoever holds the government, I think I need to improve my ability for surviving under any circumstances, and keeping my physical and mental conditions healthy.

I read the article "Purge myself from prejudice"(original: 放空自己) from Ben's blog. It really made sense to me. He is one of my friends and he is outstanding. After graduating from Oxford in British, he is now an enterpriser in China. In his article, he described that he is just like a blank paper in the whole new surroundings; he is unfamiliar with everything there and nearly don't know anyone. He wishes that he won't be shackled by his past, no matter successes or failures. Forget everything and face new challenges.

Turning my eye to look over myself, I think it is now a critical moment for my life. Many people who knew me can not connect past Woody with present Woody easily. They always think that I should have achieved something with music. Indeed, now I am up a gum tree because of my immature mind and some of my incorrect decisions. Further, also unluckily, the accident happened in Sydney last year nearly declared the end of my music performance life. In the past, I had some proud honors and was good at playing French horn. However, it is no use saying about my past or being regretful for it. I have to accept the fact. I feel some happenings which we think they were bad are not always certainly that bad to us. Sometimes, these "accidents" destroy our original plans, but give us another different kind of compensation in the future.

Recently, it is not smooth in Taiwan political situation. The Vice-President Lu, in an interview for the topic of Mei LI Tao political event in ETTV, talked about the reality in Politics. “The glory you got in the past Mei LI Tao event could not ensure you can get political power in the future”, she said. For example, Mr. Shih Ming-Te, being as a forerunner of Taiwan democracy movement, however, did not enjoy the gains in politics. “If you want to gain new political power, you have to do something new everyday, and discard the past." This is her comment about it.

Even excellent movie stars or super athletes also have a day they must say goodbye to their splendid past. Some people choose to go down the stage gracefully and composedly, like Andre, Agassi. On the other hand, there were some movie stars who were depressed because they could not accept the truth that they were not a famous person on the screen anymore. It depends on how you think about it.

No matter what I have done perfectly or what mistakes I have made in the past, I hope I can go ahead with full energy. Don't think about the past.

The Ex- British Premier David Lloyd George closed every door he walked passed. His friends were confused about George's actions. George said: I close all the doors behind me all my life. When you close the doors, you leave all the past good or bad behind you, and then you can make a fresh start.

I hope I can…
Remember to close doors anytime.
Be honest to face the history. Devote myself to creating a new positive situation.
